Regular screening mammography can often detect breast cancer long before it can be felt. Digital mammography, used at The Breast Center, surpasses conventional X-ray film for detecting breast cancer. Digital images offer greater clarity and can be manipulated for the best vantage point.
Mammography involves x-raying the breast to identify and evaluate cysts, tumors, lesions or other abnormalities. The procedure can identify abnormalities in breast tissue before a lump or growth can be felt during a self-exam. When an abnormality of the breast tissue is discovered, further analysis may be required to determine if the growth is malignant cancerous or benign non-cancerous.
Combining a yearly mammogram with monthly breast self-examination and a yearly clinical breast exam provides women age 40 and over with the best means of early detection of breast abnormalities. When problems are found early, women have the best hope of controlling or curing a problem. A mammogram may save your life.
