No doubt we shall eventually be told that this has to do with the artistic integrity of her portrayal of Nazi war criminal Hanna Schmitz, the character at the centre of the story. In the past this has led to a series of controversies because pictures have been electronically altered to make her appear slimmer. This time the film company insists that what cinemagoers will see is for real.
With both Revolutionary Road and The Reader coming into theaters around the world, this has been quite a creative year for year-old British actress Kate Winslet. And ironically, these two films complement each other in that they're both partially set during the same period -- the post-World War Two-era of the mids. The director has shown a fondness for the cruel, fragmented randomness of life with both of his previous films, a theme that continues in The Readeras the cool Hanna meets the sick Michael in an alley he is played by newcomer David Kross in a strong debut.
